Vintage Halloween Decorating Ideas That Feel Like Halloween Used To

Halloween used to be a little less polished and a lot more fun.

This post may contains affiliate links. If you click and make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products I personally use or genuinely believe in. Thank you for supporting 100 Perfect Gifts.

There were grinning pumpkins, black cats with arched backs, paper bats in the windows, orange lights, candy in a big bowl, and decorations that came out of the same box every October.

Some of them were probably a little bent. Nobody cared.

Cozy living room with vintage Halloween decorating ideas, jack-o-lanterns, black cat decor, and candles on the mantel.

That’s the Halloween look I think so many of us are missing.

The best vintage Halloween decorating ideas don’t require filling your house with expensive antiques.” It’s really about bringing back the colors, characters, lighting, and slightly imperfect charm of older Halloweens.

You can do that with things you already own, a few thrift-store finds, some simple homemade decorations, and a handful of new pieces that actually add something to the room.

And you certainly don’t need to decorate every available surface.

Here’s how to give the inside of your home that nostalgic, cozy, just-spooky-enough Halloween feeling.

Start With Old-Fashioned Halloween Colors

Orange and black are still hard to beat.

For a vintage look, though, I like them a little softer.

Think pumpkin orange instead of neon orange. Matte black instead of shiny plastic. Then mix in cream, brown, aged brass, mustard, dark green, faded rust, and warm wood.

You don’t need every color in every room.

In fact, two or three colors repeated throughout the house usually look better.

If you already decorate for fall, don’t take everything down. Keep your pumpkins, baskets, wood pieces, crocks, blankets, and fall colors.

Then add Halloween to them.

Put a black cat beside the pumpkins. Add black candlesticks to the mantel. Drape an orange-and-black throw over a chair.

Suddenly your fall room looks like Halloween without starting over.

Bring Back Black Cats, Witches, Bats and Jack-O’-Lanterns

You don’t need a complicated Halloween theme.

The old characters still work.

Black cats, witches, bats, ghosts, crescent moons, owls, and grinning jack-o’-lanterns immediately give a room that vintage Halloween feeling.

Look for shapes and faces that feel more like old Halloween cards or decorations than modern cartoon characters.

A black cat with an arched back. A witch flying across a moon. A pumpkin with a slightly crooked grin. A simple ghost.

These pieces don’t all have to match. Actually, it’s better if they don’t.

Vintage Halloween should look as though you collected it over time.

Use Pillows and Throws to Change the Room Fast

Pillows are one of the easiest ways to decorate a living room for Halloween without covering every table with little decorations.

You don’t need an entire matching set, either.

Keep most of the pillows you already use and replace one or two covers.

Look for vintage Halloween pillow covers with black cats, smiling pumpkins, witches, moons, bats, or old-fashioned Halloween designs.

Faded orange, black, cream, and mustard work especially well.

Pillow covers also solve one of my biggest complaints about seasonal decor: storage.

When Halloween is over, remove the covers, fold them up, and put your regular ones back on. You don’t have four bulky Halloween pillows taking up half a closet.

Add a cozy throw over the arm of the sofa or a chair.

It doesn’t even have to say Halloween.

A rust, orange-and-black plaid, cream, mustard, or dark green blanket can give the whole room a warmer October look.

Let Halloween Lighting Do Some of the Work

Lighting changes the mood of a room faster than another dozen decorations.

Turn off the bright overhead lights in the evening and use lamps, string lights, candles, and little lighted Halloween pieces instead.

Orange string lights are especially good for this look.

Wrap a short strand around the mantel. Tuck them along the back of a bookshelf. Put them around a kitchen window.

You don’t need miles of lights. A warm orange glow in a couple of places is enough.

Use Flameless Candles Where They Make Sense

Candles have the perfect old-fashioned Halloween look, but paper decorations, fabric, dried leaves, and open flames aren’t a great combination.

Flameless tapers give you the look without the worry.

Put them in brass, black, pewter, or dark wood candleholders.

Instead of lining up five matching candlesticks, collect a few in different heights.

That looks much more natural.

Create a Vintage Halloween Mantel

The mantel is one place where it’s easy to go overboard.

You don’t need twenty little objects lined up from one end to the other.

Start with one main piece.

That might be an old mirror, a wreath, a large pumpkin, a black cat, a Halloween village piece, or one of those wonderful old-style jack-o’-lanterns.

Then add smaller pieces around it.

Try three pumpkins in different sizes, two mismatched candlesticks, a black cat, and a little orange lighting.

That’s plenty.

If you want more texture, tuck in black gauze, a simple garland, or a few bare branches.

Add a Few Old-School Paper Decorations

Paper Halloween decorations have a completely different feeling from shiny plastic decor.

Think honeycomb pumpkins, black cats, tissue-paper decorations, paper garlands, jointed skeletons, witches, and old-school party decorations.

They remind me more of classroom Halloween parties and decorations that got carefully folded and put away every year.

You can use them without covering the walls.

Hang a paper garland across the mantel. Put a honeycomb pumpkin on a side table. Hang a black cat from a cabinet knob. Tuck a paper decoration into a bookshelf.

Give the Kitchen Some Halloween Without Buying Everything Again

I don’t want a Halloween version of every single thing in my kitchen.

I don’t need Halloween measuring cups, Halloween utensils, Halloween canisters, Halloween salt shakers, and twelve Halloween mugs.

A few useful pieces go a long way.

Start with towels.

If you have open shelves, mix Halloween pieces with things already there.

Amber bottles, crocks, cutting boards, cream dishes, old pitchers, and baskets all work with vintage Halloween decor.

Add a pumpkin or black cat and you’re done.

Make the Dining Table Feel Like an Old Halloween Party

You don’t need a complicated tablescape.

For a party or Halloween dinner, honeycomb pumpkins and paper decorations are another easy way to bring in that older party look.

And if you don’t want to store a seasonal centerpiece, go outside and cut a few bare branches.

Put them in a heavy crock or pitcher and hang small paper bats from them.

Almost free, and it looks good.

Don’t Forget the Candy Bowl

This is one of the easiest affiliate opportunities in the whole post because a candy bowl is actually useful.

A big black bowl works.

So does ceramic.

Look for jack-o’-lanterns, black cats, witches, or old-fashioned Halloween faces.

Put it on the kitchen island, sideboard, entry table, or coffee table.

If you don’t keep candy sitting out, use it for mini pumpkins, pinecones, or wrapped treats when company comes over.

Use Thrift-Store Finds to Keep It From Looking Too New

Some of my favorite things for vintage Halloween decorating aren’t Halloween decorations.

Look for brass candlesticks, amber bottles, dark wood frames, old books, baskets, crocks, glass jars, silver or pewter-look trays, old pitchers, black bowls, lanterns, wooden boxes, and interesting pottery.

These pieces make newer Halloween decorations look more collected.

Take a new ceramic pumpkin and put it on an old stack of books beside a brass candlestick.

It instantly looks less like something you just pulled out of a shipping box.

You also don’t have to find everything at once.

Part of the charm is adding pieces over the years.

Repurpose Things You Already Own

Before you buy another Halloween decoration, walk through the house.

You may already own half of what you need.

Old Books

Stack dark-colored books under pumpkins, cats, or candleholders.

They add height to a display without another decorative riser.

Baskets

Fill a basket with pumpkins, blankets, pinecones, or Halloween candy.

Crocks and Pottery

Put bare branches in them or use them to hold kitchen utensils while you’re decorating.

Glass Bottles and Jars

Amber and green bottles have an especially good old apothecary look.

Christmas Lights

Warm white lights can work just as well for Halloween.

Orange Christmas lights are even better if you happen to have them.

Fall Throws and Pillows

Keep them.

Add one Halloween pillow instead of changing the whole sofa.

That’s cheaper and usually looks better.

Make a Few Halloween Decorations Yourself

Vintage Halloween and homemade Halloween belong together.

You don’t need to be particularly crafty.

Cut Black Paper Bats

Cut several sizes from black cardstock.

Tape a small group around a mirror, cabinet, or doorway.

Don’t make them perfectly identical. They’ll look better.

[AFFILIATE OPPORTUNITY: black cardstock craft pack]

Make a Simple Paper Garland

Cut pumpkins, cats, moons, or circles from orange and black cardstock.

String them across a mantel, china cabinet, bookshelf, or window.

[AFFILIATE OPPORTUNITY: orange-and-black cardstock pack]

Decorate With Bare Branches

Bring in branches from the yard after checking them carefully for insects.

Put them in a crock or vase.

Hang paper bats, little pumpkins, or tiny lights from the branches.

Use Scrap Fabric

A piece of black gingham, faded orange cotton, old lace, cheesecloth, or plaid fabric can become a runner, basket liner, or simple garland.

You don’t need finished edges for everything.

Halloween can handle a little fraying.

Turn Jars Into Halloween Decorations

Use old glass jars for candy, little lights, or simple Halloween labels.

If you’re adding paper or fabric around the jar, use a flameless light rather than a real candle.

Add Halloween to the Bedroom Without Turning It Into a Theme Room

You can carry the vintage Halloween look into a bedroom very easily.

Change one pillow cover. Add an orange or rust throw at the bottom of the bed. Put a small ceramic pumpkin or black cat on the dresser. Use a flameless candle or little Halloween tree on the nightstand.

That’s enough.

Unless you genuinely love Halloween bedding, I wouldn’t buy an entire seasonal bedding set.

It’s expensive, bulky to store, and a few smaller changes give you almost the same effect.

Try a Small Halloween Village

Halloween villages can become a collection all by themselves.

If you love them, that’s fine.

But you don’t need to buy the entire village at once.

Start with one house.

Add a little tree, a pumpkin, or a couple of figures.

Put it on a sideboard, bookshelf, or mantel.

If you still love it next Halloween, add another piece.

Building it slowly makes the collection more fun and keeps you from spending a fortune in one season.

How to Make New Halloween Decorations Look Vintage

Not everything has to be old.

New pieces can fit beautifully if you choose the right ones.

Look for matte rather than high-gloss finishes, muted orange rather than neon, cream rather than bright white, aged brass and dark metal, wood, ceramic, papier-mâché, paper, fabric, and amber or colored glass.

You can also repaint inexpensive pieces if the surface allows it.

A too-bright pumpkin can look completely different in faded orange, cream, mustard, or matte black.

Just don’t distress everything.

If every object has fake chipped paint, it starts looking manufactured again.

Mixing genuine old household pieces, new vintage-style decor, handmade items, and natural materials usually creates the look without much effort.

How to Keep Halloween Decor From Looking Cluttered

This may be the most useful decorating tip in the whole article.

Don’t decorate every surface.

Pick the places that matter most: the mantel, sofa or favorite chair, kitchen counter, dining table, one bookcase, and entry table.

Then let the rest of the room breathe.

I also like what I call the one-Halloween-thing approach.

Take an ordinary fall arrangement and add one unmistakably Halloween piece.

A black cat. A witch. A jack-o’-lantern. A few bats.

That’s often enough.

And before you buy something, decide where it’s going.

If you can’t think of a spot for it, leave it at the store.

Cute isn’t a storage plan.

Vintage Halloween Decorating Ideas That Cost Almost Nothing

  • Cut bats from black paper.
  • Use pumpkins you already bought for fall.
  • Bring in bare branches.
  • Stack old books.
  • Fill baskets with pumpkins.
  • Reuse warm white or orange Christmas lights.
  • Make paper chains.
  • Use glass bottles and jars.
  • Pull out brass candlesticks.
  • Use crocks and old pottery.
  • Make fabric garlands from scraps.
  • Fill a bowl with old-fashioned candy.
  • Switch one or two pillow covers instead of buying new pillows.

Halloween didn’t used to require a delivery truck arriving every other day.

It still doesn’t.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vintage Halloween Decorating

What is vintage Halloween decor?

Vintage Halloween decor generally refers to older Halloween decorations or newer pieces inspired by Halloween styles from earlier decades.

Common elements include black cats, witches, jack-o’-lanterns, ghosts, bats, paper decorations, honeycomb tissue pieces, ceramic pumpkins, warm lighting, and classic orange-and-black colors.

How can I make my house look vintage for Halloween?

Start with traditional orange and black, then add cream, warm wood, aged metal, and softer autumn colors.

Use classic Halloween characters, paper decorations, ceramic pieces, old books, brass candlesticks, baskets, glass bottles, and warm lighting.

Mix newer decorations with thrifted and homemade pieces rather than buying everything from one matching collection.

What are traditional Halloween decorations?

Traditional Halloween imagery includes pumpkins and jack-o’-lanterns, witches, black cats, bats, ghosts, skeletons, moons, candles, and harvest decorations.

Older Halloween decorating also relied heavily on paper, tissue decorations, garlands, masks, and homemade pieces.

When should you start decorating for Halloween?

Whenever you’ll enjoy it.

If you like a gradual change, put out fall decor in late August or September and add the more obvious Halloween pieces in late September or early October.

What colors work best for vintage Halloween decor?

Orange and black are the traditional starting point.

Cream, faded rust, brown, aged gold, mustard, dark green, and warm wood tones also work well.

For a vintage look, muted colors usually work better than neon shades.

How do you make new Halloween decorations look old?

Choose matte finishes, muted colors, ceramic, paper, fabric, wood, and aged-looking metals.

Mix new decorations with genuinely older household items such as books, bottles, baskets, crocks, trays, and candlesticks.

You can also repaint suitable inexpensive decorations, but don’t overdo artificial distressing.

How can I decorate for Halloween without spending much money?

Shop your house first.

Use books, baskets, jars, bottles, pumpkins, branches, candles, fall blankets, and Christmas lights.

Make paper bats and garlands.

Check thrift stores for candleholders, pottery, bowls, baskets, and other pieces that can become part of a Halloween display.

How can I decorate for Halloween without making my house look tacky?

Use a limited color palette and decorate a few focal areas instead of every surface.

Mix Halloween-specific items with ordinary home decor.

Avoid buying complete matching collections.

Leave some empty space.

Can Halloween decor feel cozy instead of scary?

Absolutely.

Use warm lighting, blankets, pillows, pumpkins, black cats, friendly ghosts, candles, old books, baskets, and vintage-style decorations.

You can make a room unmistakably Halloween without using gore or frightening decorations.

What vintage Halloween decorations are worth buying first?

Start with pieces you’ll use in several places or keep for years.

Good first purchases include a pair of vintage-style pillow covers, flameless tapers, a ceramic jack-o’-lantern, a black cat decoration, orange string lights, a candy bowl, or a small Halloween tree.

Build the collection slowly instead of trying to finish it in one season.

Bring Back the Halloween You Remember

A house doesn’t need to look like a Halloween store to feel special in October.

Sometimes all it takes is a glowing pumpkin, an orange light in the window, a black cat on the mantel, and a bowl of candy in the kitchen.

Mix in things you’ve had for years.

Make something out of paper.

Use the old books and brass candlesticks.

Put a Halloween pillow on the sofa.

And don’t worry if everything isn’t perfectly coordinated.

Those little imperfections are part of what makes old Halloween decorations so much fun.

You aren’t trying to recreate a showroom.

You’re creating the kind of Halloween people remember.
