Equipment

1 Mixing bowl and standard kitchen equipment

Ingredients

  • 5 cups apples peeled and sliced
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour or Sunrise flour if preferred
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar for topping
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp butter cold and cubed
  • ½ cup milk

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 375°F. Butter an 8-inch square baking dish.
  • Toss the apples with 1/3 cup sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Spread in the dish.
  • Whisk together the flour, remaining sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter, then stir in the milk just until a soft dough forms.
  • Drop spoonfuls of dough over the apples. It does not need to cover every inch.
  • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the topping is golden and the apple filling is bubbling.

Notes

Serve warm as-is or with vanilla ice cream.
